Dear Guests and Visitors of Auroville

Incidents of violence have increased in and around our area, as they have also increased, unfortunately,
everywhere in the world. Therefore we feel it is our responsibility to warn you that the carefree atmosphere, which many of us enjoyed here in earlier years, has very much changed, and we must tell our guests, friends, and visitors to be careful. Please follow a few commonsense rules when you are moving about in Auroville. Please observe the following during your stay in Auroville:

  • It is important for people who come from the West to be aware that India has a different culture from the one most of you are used to, and that local customs must be respected. This includes a modest dress code, particularly
    for women.

  • The laws of India must be respected. Consumption, possession and selling of drugs are illegal in India, and contrary to the spirit and ideals of Auroville.

  • Whether cycling or using other forms of transport, move in pairs or groups after dusk, and on night excursions (particularly in places which are isolated, or where you may get lost). This applies to everyone, but particularly to
    women.

  • For obvious security reasons, please do not offer rides to men you don’t know.

  • Do not go to the beach alone (particularly women).

  • Keep your valuables locked up safely at all times. Auroville does have some serious theft problems, so temptation should be kept to a minimum. When you must carry cash, make a point of not displaying large sums of money when in public places. Ask the manager of your guest house to keep your valuables for you; s/he should have a lockable safe for this purpose.

  • If you want to drive a vehicle, you should have an International Driving Licence. Licences are granted for moped use to people above 16 years of age, and motorcycle licences are granted at 18 years of age. A Permit is
compulsory for two wheelers and all other vehicles.

  • In case there is a problem you should report it to your guest house manager without delay.

Sincerely, the Auroville Security Board - avsecurity@auroville.org.in
